Coming of Age...

My Comeback's Lagging

My Comeback's Lagging explores the long middle of a comeback: doubt, comparison, false starts and days when simply continuing is the achievement.

Two recordings

The same composition, recorded twice. The versions differ in structure and length, not only in voice.

Lyrics — Ilajna's Version

My comeback's lagging...

Yeah...

But maybe...

I've still got one more try...

Everybody knows the girl I used to be,

The one who made it all look easy naturally.

They still believe I'm only one good day away,

But somehow all my confidence got lost along the way.

The planner's full of promises,

The mirror knows the truth...

I'm learning how to meet myself

Without my old excuse.

Another list...

Another plan...

Another quiet start...

Maybe healing doesn't happen

All at once...

It happens heart by heart.

My comeback's lagging...

I'm still finding my pace.

Some dreams just take a little longer

Than the world's expected race.

I've stumbled more than once...

I've questioned every sign...

But somewhere underneath the silence...

Hope is still alive.

My comeback's lagging...

Maybe that's alright...

'Cause I've still got one more dream...

And one more try tonight.

I don't need yesterday

To tell me who I am.

I'm more than every highlight

People saved inside their hands.

One small step this morning...

One more page to write...

Maybe courage isn't winning...

Maybe courage is tonight.

What if I don't need

To become who I once was?

What if the girl I'm growing into

Needs a little more because...

The road became much steeper,

The heart became much wise...

Maybe every quiet failure

Is teaching me to rise

My comeback's lagging...

But I'm still here somehow.

Maybe this isn't the ending...

Maybe this is learning how.

The world's still moving quickly...

I'll move one step at a time.

I don't need all the answers...

Just one more reason to climb.

My comeback's lagging...

And that's perfectly alright...

Because tomorrow's waiting...

And I've still got...

One more try

Alarm set...

Sunrise soon...

One fresh page...

One more try...

Lyrics — Keviv's Version

Ma Comeback's lagging
Yeah...

Portal screen is glowing, burning through my eyes
I'm spiraling at midnight, caffeine in my veins
Tracing all the red ink, calculating the gains
Pulling on my hoodie, hiding from the screen
Trying to be a genius if you know what I mean
Frantic and I'm shaking, losing all my cool
Playing the perfectionist in a high pressure school
Watching all my college chances slowly fade away, yeah

It's not very demure, it's not very kind
To lose my grip on sanity, to lose my peace of mind
I'm chasing down the numbers, I'm dying for the grade
Watching every memory in the panic start to fade
My comeback is lagging, I'm running out of air
Once the bit is over tell me is it even fair
I'm breaking in the silence, yeah I'm breaking in the light
Red pen on the paper, haunting me tonight

Reading through the syllabus like it's a sacred law
Every little margin is a deep and jagged flaw
My coffee's growing cold, my focus is a ghost
I'm burning out the circuits that I'm needing the most
So tell me, tell me, is it over? Is the narrative set?
Do I have to lose it all to win the only bet?
Take the degree, take the bar

Take the hollow promise that I throw away
I'm machine, I'm a mess, I'm a tired design
Drawing lines in ink that I'll never cross, never cross

It's not very demure, it's not very kind
To lose my grip on sanity, to lose my peace of mind
I'm chasing down the numbers, I'm dying for the grade
Watching every memory in the panic start to fade
My comeback is lagging, I'm running out of air
Once the bit is over tell me is it even fair
I'm breaking in the silence, yeah I'm breaking in the light
Red pen on the paper, haunting me tonight

The grade is just a number
But it feels like the end
Yeah, it's not demure
Not demure.....
At all

Story Behind My Comeback's Lagging

“My Comeback’s Lagging” came from a feeling that is both funny and painfully familiar: you know you are supposed to be making a comeback, but somehow your comeback itself seems to be buffering.

The song uses the language of lag, loading, delay and digital frustration as a metaphor for something much more human: the gap between wanting to move forward and actually feeling ready to do it.

We often imagine recovery, confidence or self-improvement as something dramatic. A setback happens, we disappear for a while, and then one day we return stronger, sharper and completely transformed. Real life is rarely that clean. Sometimes you are still trying to rebuild while watching everyone else appear to move faster. Sometimes you make progress and then stall again. Sometimes motivation arrives before energy does. Sometimes you know exactly what you want to become, but emotionally you are still catching up.

That contradiction is where the song lives.

The title is intentionally playful because we did not want the song to treat struggle with excessive seriousness. “My Comeback’s Lagging” sounds almost like a complaint about bad internet, but underneath it is a recognition that growth can be awkward, delayed and deeply unglamorous.

Both Keviv’s Version and Ilajna’s Version approach that same idea through different emotional textures. The circumstances and internal voice may differ, but both versions are built around the experience of trying to regain momentum while the world seems to expect an instant transformation.

There is also a subtle commentary on the culture around us. Social media loves the finished comeback story: the transformation photo, the achievement, the glow-up, the victory lap. What it rarely shows is the long middle section where nothing feels cinematic at all. That middle can involve doubt, procrastination, comparison, false starts and days when simply continuing is the achievement.

That is why the song belongs so naturally inside Coming of Age…. The album repeatedly questions the polished narratives we are given about becoming an adult, finding yourself, succeeding and moving on. “My Comeback’s Lagging” pushes back against the idea that personal growth has to happen on schedule.

Its message is not that delay does not matter. It is that delay is not the same thing as defeat.

Sometimes the comeback is happening quietly, beneath the surface, long before anybody else can see it.

And sometimes the loading screen is part of the story.
