Struggling in 4K
Struggling in 4K explores the distance between a polished online image and the anxiety, pressure and exhaustion hidden behind it.
Two recordings
The same composition, recorded twice. The versions differ in structure and length, not only in voice.
Ilajna's Version
Lyrics — Ilajna's Version
Hold still... Perfect... Yeah... She posts the sunset A golden glow on her skin An aesthetic life She's letting us all in Took a hundred photos Just to get it right Acting like she woke up In this flawless light Caption says she's thriving Living on the coast But she was in my car Sobbing right before the post We're playing the directors Of our little lies Hiding all the burnout Right behind our eyes Blurring out the shadows Editing the pain Posing for the camera Dancing in the rain The grid is looking perfect The colors are so deep But half the girls I follow Are just crying in their sleep We swipe away the ugly Keeping only the elite Just another pretty doll Passing on the street Oh... It's a cinematic masterpiece Glowing on the screen Acting out the lead role Of a teenage dream But the ring light's getting heavy And smiling is a chore Yeah we're struggling in 4K Crying on the floor We're getting curated Painted in the light But tell me Who is actually doing fine tonight? We look like a movie But the script is a fake Just smiling for the camera Wondering what it will take Struggling in 4K... Leaving the real me behind... A casual little photo dump A coffee and a blur A candid in the mirror Though I know how we were Touching up the lip gloss Holding in our breath Posing in the bathroom Stressing half to death Waiting for the dopamine A comment from a friend Typing out "You're stunning" Pretending till the end Screen time is toxic Self-esteem is shot But look at the aesthetic Look at what I've got Strip away the filters Take away the glare Is there anybody breathing Underneath the hair? If I break down If I show the mess Would you still double-tap Or would you love me less? We're shooting a blockbuster Watching it depart A high-definition camera And a broken heart Oh... Cinematic masterpiece... But I'm losing my mind... Struggling in 4K... Leaving the real me behind
Keviv's Version
Lyrics — Keviv's Version
Hold still... Perfect... Yeah... He posts steering wheel with the watch upon his wrist An uber cool life that doesn't quite exist Captions say he's grinding, never takes a break But he was in my car, stressing over each stake Rich on the grid, Bankrupt in the soul Everybody sees the image, Nobody sees the toll We're directing movies Nobody will know Every perfect picture Hides another low Every little highlight Every perfect smile Only tells a fraction Of what's behind the file It's a cinematic masterpiece Glowing on the screen Acting out the lead role Of a digital dream The armor's getting heavy Smiling is a chore Yeah we're struggling in 4K Crashing on the floor Struggling in 4K... Gym photo... Boys' night... Another perfect frame... Laughing for the camera Trying to hide the strain Quoting self-made prophets Chasing every trend Everybody looks alright Till the story ends Everybody looks alright Till the story ends Take away the filters Take away the glare Is there anybody breathing Underneath the streetwear? If I drop the armor If I show the mess Would you still respect me... Or just respect me less? It's a cinematic masterpiece Glowing on the screen Acting out the lead role Of a digital dream The armor's getting heavy Smiling is a chore Yeah we're struggling in 4K Crashing on the floor Struggling in 4K... Rich on the grid... Bankrupt in the soul... Everybody sees the image... Nobody sees the toll
Story Behind Struggling in 4K
“Struggling in 4K” was built around a very modern contradiction: we have never been better at presenting our lives, and yet that presentation can be completely disconnected from how we actually feel.
Both Keviv’s and Ilajna’s versions live inside that tension.
In Ilajna’s Version, the imagery is polished, beautiful and painfully familiar: the perfect sunset, the carefully chosen photo, the caption saying everything is going great. But behind that image is a much messier reality. One of the central ideas in her lyrics is that someone can look completely put together online and still have been crying moments before. The grid looks perfect, while the person behind it is exhausted.
That is where the song’s title comes from.
We are not just struggling anymore.
We are struggling in 4K.
High-definition pain. Carefully lit. Beautifully framed. Ready to post.
In Keviv’s Version, the same idea shifts into a more masculine kind of performance. The symbols are different: the steering wheel, the watch, the streetwear, the “grind,” the appearance of control and success. But underneath that image is anxiety, pressure, insecurity and the fear of appearing weak.
One of the core lines in Keviv’s version is the contrast between looking wealthy or successful on the grid while feeling completely depleted inside: “Rich on the grid, bankrupt in the soul.”
That line captures much of what the song is trying to say.
The internet does not only encourage us to show our best moments. It can also quietly teach us to perform a character: successful, attractive, productive, confident, desirable, unbothered.
Eventually, carrying that character becomes heavy.
That is why both versions use the idea of weight differently. In Ilajna’s world, the ring light starts to feel heavy. In Keviv’s, it is the armour.
Different symbols, same exhaustion.
And that is where the two versions become especially meaningful together.
Ilajna’s question is essentially:
If I show you the mess instead of the perfect picture, will you still value me?
Keviv’s question is:
If I take off the armour and admit that I am not as strong as I look, will you still respect me?
Those are different fears, shaped by different expectations, but they come from the same place: the fear that our unedited selves might be less lovable, less impressive or less worthy than the versions we present.
The bridge in both versions deliberately pushes toward that vulnerability. Ilajna wonders whether people would still “double-tap” if the polished image disappeared. Keviv wonders whether respect would survive if the performance of strength disappeared.
That is why “Struggling in 4K” is not really a song attacking social media. Social media is simply the clearest stage on which the deeper problem becomes visible.
The real subject is performance.
How much of ourselves do we turn into presentation?
How often do we confuse looking successful with being okay?
And what happens when the person behind the image can no longer keep acting?
Within Coming of Age…, this song marks a point where the album becomes more openly critical of the masks adulthood can encourage us to wear.
For Ilajna, the mask may be the flawless life.
For Keviv, it may be control, status and invulnerability.
But eventually both arrive at the same uncomfortable truth:
A cinematic masterpiece can still contain someone crying on the floor.
And perhaps growing up begins when we become less interested in looking perfect, and more willing to be seen as real.
